Peter Dockerman, a former acrobat, lives a dissolute life in London, crippled in a fall and reduced to binge drinking and pub brawling. When his wife, who must prostitute herself to put food on their table (and whisky on the sideboard), is murdered by a serial killer patterning his vicious attacks on the legendary Jack the Ripper, Peter becomes the prime suspect in the eyes of Inspector Campbell of Scotland Yard and his associate.
